Temple of Me

Welcome. All web sites are temples to their creators. Temple of Me will reflect what interests me, Temple of Me. I am a husband, father (twice), American, and liberal. I live in a "Red state" in the South. I am nearsighted, ambidextrous and over 30. Actually, I'm 153.33% of thirty.

That shit is just not funny.

Everyone who reads this blog knows I have an obvious appreciation for Joey deVilla over at The Adventures of Accordion Guy in the 21st Century. Over and over again he's pointed me to something interesting, thought provoking, humorous or all three.

So when I started to read the details of Bent or Broke? (or: Details' "Gay or Asian?" article) I knew it would affect me. I hadn't yet heard about the "Gay or Asian" photo in Details. I could tell that many people were offended. I could see why. (I had one problem with Joey's post. I said so in his comments and won't repeat it here.)

I'll continue expecting you've read the post at Accordion Guy....

I know I sound like a broken record here, but I'll say it again. It's Two-thousand and fucking four people! Why the hell does ANYONE think ridiculing another color sub-group* of humanity is funny? What is Ms. McNally scared of?

Yeah, I think that kind of "humor" isn't humorous. Self-deprecating humor is my style. It's all I can do in my wit-challenged way. And yes, I think it is fair to be personal with humor. My friends know my foibles and when one of them points out one I can turn red and laugh with them.

But to lump all "wops," "pub crawlers", "rednecks" and "fags" together is just ridiculous. (I used those epithets because I have been called each of the four at some point in my life.) Just because a man listens to Leann Rimes doesn't mean he beats his wife. Just because he wears an American Bald Eagle t-shirt doesn't mean he is a redneck.

Look beyond the clothing or skin care. Whitney McNally didn't.

That's why I think you (be you black, white, olive-skinned, sunburned, or pale as a ghost) should head over to Asian Media Watchdog and join their protest in what manner that is appropriate for you.

Maybe McNally hasn't targeted your heritage yet, but she will.

I included the thing to which you objected to show part of the reaction, as well as to preserve it for the entry -- it has no permanent URL.

Thanks Joey. I appreciate your overview of the uproar. I hope readers of Temple of Me read your post and my comments. I hope also they understand I wasn't objecting to your post, but to the cartoon that was included.
