Cory Doctorow is Right (This Time)
I agree that claiming a trademark on super-hero is pure greed. These are generic words in English. They are not invented words like "threepeat."
Let's ask Webster:
super: "exhibiting the characteristics of its type to an extreme or excessive degree"
hero: "a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability"
Put them together: super-hero, superhero, super hero. Note enough? Ok, super hero.
This isn't something new with marvel and DC. They've claimed a trademark on Super Hero for years. Now they also want the dash version. Wait! Has anyone trademarked the dash yet? I bet Coca-Cola did that years ago. Ty Cobb probably had that idea in his 50s. Nevermind.
What? You thought I'd never link to boing boing again?
