We gave our five year-old a camera today. It's a $15 point-and-shoot digital. It'll hold 60 compressed shots before I have to download them for her. So far she seems to be very interested in architecture and broken sticks.
She shares a trait with my mother. Many pictures of my childhood show the edge of a red fingernail. More than once today I reminded my daughter to be careful of the wrist strap getting in front of the lens. I'd say about half of the pictures today had that blurry strap effect you see in this picture.

Between the ages of 7 and 14, whenever I had a camera in my hands I took a picture of a cat....Gee, probably not much of a difference from how I am now.

As I recall, I mostly took pictures of people.
Tell your daughter to loop the strap over the thumb, down the back of the hand, and up to the camera in her palm. The length may need to be adjusted. This way, the hand is strapped pretty securely to the camera.
I learned this from an old cop who said that's how they used to arrange the lanyards on their riot batons, but it works for other things, too.
